If you are looking to use your HPC to access Compuserve's content you will not be able to do so in a WinCIM manner. I think, however, that they still support regular terminal sessions which means that you could use the Terminal program that came with your HPC. You may need to make some changes to your setting so that you see menus. I think WinCIM and some other navigators change the settings so that all you see is a command prompt.

The HP300/320 do not have internal ram expansion. The HP300/320 do support storage (like floppy disks) in the PC Card slot and on the 320 only, the compact flash slot.

Basically, you can increase storage memory by adding either a Flash, Compact Flash or SRAM card to your HPC. You could then use that card for most of your storage and increase the amount of memory available for running applications. But, you are stuck with whatever internal memory you have in terms of allocating memory for running apps.
(BTW, it would have been nice if Microsoft had included support for storage cards in the same spot where they show memory. Right now out of the box you really don't know what memory you have available on a card except by using a third party app.)

Has anyone successfully printed using the fonts in pocket word direct to the printer with out being attached to the desktop and HPC link. I have tried printing from the 320LX to a printer using a serial to parallel converter and in pocket work i get ascii text even though the document is in 20 pt font or different fonts.
Should I be doing something else? I ordered Bquare software for printing but i dont think that they support pocket word fonts yet.

If you but pcAnwhere CE you will get a "light" version of the PC host. So, unless you are using pcAnywhere on your PC with other PCs and want the full-featured PC version, just use the version for Windows CE. It is all you need to communicate between your PC and HPC.

The Surerange Analysis home page (included in our collection of Windows CE Web sites) has a shareware application that appears to be similar to HP's Solver. I haven't tried it yet... if you give it a whirl, please let everyone know how you like it.
BTW, EVERY time I speak with HP, I "scold" them about not adding a decent calculator to the 300 series. ;)

Does anyone know if there are any limitations on the size of compact flash card that will work with the 320 XL? I bought a Simple Technology 8 MB compact flash. When I plug it into the compact flash slot it does not appear in explorer, even though it seems that the HP sees it because it pops up the PC Card with batteries warning.
If I plug the thing into its PC card adapter and then plug it into the PC card slot it is recognized.
I bought the thing because Simple Technology was included in the solution guide that came with the HP. (The guide includes references to compact flash, and shows a picture of it.) I also thought I read that Simple really OEMs Sandisk cards, which are recommended by HP.
I am beginning to suspect that the HP only recognizes CF cards up to 4 MB. I say this because there website only lists 2 and 4 MB cards, and they sell under their own name those size cards. BUT, it sure would be nice that if they only support up to 4 MB cards that they would plainly state it somewhere in the documentation and their web site.
Anyway, I need to confirm that the card will not work with my HP, then I will return it and get the appropriate card.

I am very disappointed with the font size and readability of the HP. I feel the 320 is the best CE machine but it seems very limited and is primarily good as an extension of the desktop.

Marc, glad to hear that someone else has the temerity to speak up about the 320LX. I too ordered the Psion series 5, mainly because I have always loved my Psions and do not love my 320. No way to purge old calendar info from the handheld other than going item by item. It cost me $35 for MIcrosoft to agree with me when I asked about it. No way to search the calendar which is insane. Keeping track of expenses is in the Pilot but not the 320. I'm sure there will be fixes coming out in the future but in the meantime I have to say the unit was not well thought out. The font is too small, and I don't wear glasses. I sync with ECCO at my office and it does well at that. Both calendar and contacts are done in one operation. I called Psion and they can not do that at the moment. I have faith in the fact that they will resolve this in the near future. I use the 320 for wireless with a wireless modem and will be anxious to see if I can do the same with the Psion. The new keyboard looks great. I have two 3a's and a 3c and just can't seem to let them go when the new ones come out. I ordered through New Technologies. Good hearing from you Ed, you sound like an experienced Psion user. Mike at NWT said they will be shipping the 5 this Monday. The weakness in Psion in my opinion is the cost and limited scope of peripheal devices and software. Communication capability was also very limited to Psion peripheals only. These are the strengths with the 320. Hopefully this will be resolved. I have the 320 on a trial basis from office depot. Im getting very good prices here in silicon valley for these units.

The databases are internal. You can not add or delete them directly. These are controlled by applications that use the databases. On the HP, the databases can be copied to a PC Card.
The modems do work at their rated speed. The issue with their speed is based on perception. The CPU/Display on the units can keep up with 14.4k but not 28.8k or faster.

Regarding modem speed. There are a lot of factors that go into what speed one actually connects at. One of those is line noise. What might be happening is that when you dial out the two modems auto-baud down to a speed that they believe they can reliably communicate at.

It is true in theory that the ROM is upgradeable, but it may not be user upgradeable and no one has yet announced an upgrade.
I doubt that the chip is upgradeable; usually there is more than just a microprocessor change to speed up a machine. In fact, there is a speed upgrade for the HP-200LX that does NOT require changing the processor chip, but doubles the speed of the unit.

Well, since the SH3 is really a 60MHz CPU that is underclocked to 44MHz (to save battery power), if a vendor provided a jumper switch or something, it would be possible to increase to bus speed to something higher than 11 (the core runs at 4X bus speed). But I doubt HP did this.

The CE unit does recognize the card and I have been able to copy to it, but the storage capacity doesn't seem to be
there, it says that the card is full when it really shouldn't (only a couple of files on it).

I bought a Montana 28.8 locally and tried it on the 320lx. With bFax and the AC adapter connected, it has worked just fine. The easiest way is to unstack is to just reformat the card (after backing up, of course) on either your 300 or your 200.
You can also boot the 200LX without stacker (remove the card and reboot usually works). If you go to DOS you will see only the files on the unstacked portion of the card if you do a DIR. There is one additional file that actually holds the stacked data. It is a hidden file, and on an ACE card it should be named STACVOL.ACE. You can use the ATTRIB command to see it and to change it to make it visible. The command is:
D:\DOS\ATTRIB -R -S -H *.*
You then just delete all of the files, including STACVOL.ACE and your card is unstacked.

When I press tab, space or an arrow key the cursor will move in the system, but not on my screen. The only way I can tell the current position of the cursor is by changing to a different font size.

No, I don't think that 2 MB is enough. I have a 4 MB unit and need to use a Flash card. I have added the bFax program and ACT!CE (which runs its own application database and uses allot of memory).
You will also loose the back lighting, which you will need (CE screens are not very good). If you are on tight budget, do yourself a favor and buy the PalmPilot Pro. It has several advantages over CE:
1.) it is extremely effecient with both batteries and memory.
2.) The set up is much faster and easier.
3.) the synchro software (Hot Sync) is faster, more complete and more elegant than the CE.
4.) access speed to applications is definitely faster.
5.) the optional modem is very easy to use and runs on separate batteries (WinCE units will not work with a modem on batteries - period!)

Thanks but HP support has already helped me to solve the problem and it looks like I am getting a full 5 MBs out of the card. We simply deleted all files from the PC Card, including the hidden Stacker file by selecting "All Files" from the Options menu. It worked!

I have a 200LX and am pondering the 320LX (or VELO 1) and after reading your postings, I think I should give serious consideration to PSION 5. I use the address portion of 200LX all the time, and would use Excel and Word documents from my desktop more frequently if I didn't have to convert to 123 .wk1 etc. formats. Having an available modem (which doesn't totally drain the battery) is a strong plus, but not exactly a necessity. What I really want to be able to do is to jot notes on the screen which, if the PDA doesn't have it, can be added by 3rd party programs (I think).
I get the impression that the WinCE machines will be more useful to me than the 200LX but I'm hesitant about jumping in and getting any of them at this time.

I have had a 200LX for three years. I tried just about all of the CE units, decided that the 200LX beats 'em all, hands down, and have stayed with the 200LX. It's smaller, lighter, more versatile, better screen, better keyboard, better installed base of software available for it. The CE units are better at synching, but for a standalone unit, the 200LX is still top of the heap.

First, as for the 200LX and DOS, you never have to know it's there if you use the built in applications.
PDA Craig in his review of Win CE devices in Mobile Computing & Communications awarded top prize to both the Velo and the HP-320LX. The HP is larger, has a larger keyboard and larger screen, but the Velo has a built-in modem that doesn't drain the battery excessively. The HP is a little big and heavy to carry in a pocket; the Velo is more compact.
The best keyboard is the Psion, either 3c or 5. The Velo and the HP-320LX are also excellent. Most of the WinCE screens leave a lot to be desired. I haven't actually seen the Psion 5, but its screen has gotten generally good reports. Many people think the Psion 3C screen is the best ever seen in a PDA.
The Psion 3c will do documents up to 32K, the Psion 5 will do documents of unlimited size, and WinCE will do documents up to 600K. All of them are probably big enough.
The Psion 5 can embed graphics in documents; the WinCE machines cannot. It also has a draw program. It's PIM is lightyears ahead of WinCE, but if all you need is a simple address book, you probably don't care.
The Newton is a completely different animal. The Message Pad 2000 is almost twice the cost of a WinCE device if you buy the keyboard with it. It is much larger and heavier. If you really want to write instead of keyboard, it's the only choice. If the weight, size and price don't bother you, it's still a good choice. But it's as big as a subnotebook with the keyboard.

I agree with what has been said about these units. I have just seen the Psion 5, and the foldout keyboard design is far superior to any CE unit on the market. If it was slightly larger, touch typing could be easily done.
The unit that wasn't mentioned was the Pilot. Why not? It has the easiest set up, best builtin apps (especially PIM) and best (easiest, fastest and most complete) sync program for the PC (or MAC). There is no keyboard, it uses Graffitti. But, you can download DinkyPad bit map draw program for nothing off the Web. The Pilot is also the cheapest unit with the least amount of required add-ons. It is very efficient with batteries and memory.

I have a 10Mb and a 20Mb Flash (ATA) RAM cards that I used in my 200LX and I use them in my 320LX now. They work fine except they keep complaining about they may not work properly with the battery. I also have two of the 4Mb compact flash cards that I use with the 320. The machine will only recognize one card at a time, but it does work well with either. BTW all my cards are HP.

I have the 320 and just saw the Psion 5 at Office Depot yesterday. It blows the CE away in all categories at the moment. Just wait until all those software vendors start producing applications for the millions of CE machines that will be out there soon and the CE machines, if not the 320, will blow the Psion out of the water.
I know that there are many new features coming in 2.0 and there are color screens and much better resolutions that will be available for Christmas buyers to purchase. It is never comfortable to be on the bleeding edge of technology, but I think it is worth it if you want to be the lead dog.

I checked into this with HP and tried your suggestion. According to HP and my trials, CE will not support the audio feedback from the modem. I have found this to be a serious problem when troubleshooting trying to dialout of a hotel with call card. You cannot hear what the modem is doing or whether it is getting a dial tone. This is definitely unacceptable.

I have been trying to get my 320lx to run for any amount of time on rechargeable NiCads. I have purchased new "Hi Capacity" ones, and charger-conditioner, and have tried charging in the unit. Nothing seems to work. The batteries will run fine for a short amount of time, and then drop off to the point where the backlighting will not stay on.
This has been quite an adjustment for me after the Pilot, which really doesn't require an AC power unit at all.
I have run the 320 with and without the PC Flash card, and it is same story. Can I go to rechargeable Alkalines which I have recently seen? Will these recharge in the unit, or should I stay away from them?

Since you are using the backlight, the battery life is 1/10th the quoted amount. The backlight is second only to the PC Card in the amount of power they require. You will not see an appreciable difference in alkalines due to these limitations.

I have found the same frustration. I've contacted Day Timers and Frankline to see if they are coming out with anything. The month view feature is available on my PC in Schedule when I sync it to my 320, but, of course, not on the 320. I've also contacted Microsoft about adding it. That was the main reason I stuck with the "old" 200 against the Psion 3c or (a) and all the rest. The 200 had the best PIM. IMHO HP lost ground in this area in CE.

The calculator does things the 200LX will not. The calculator in the 200LX is comparable to the HP-19B, a business calculator. You can use it for scientific work, but a real scientific calculator will have more functions of interest to a scientist/engineer/mathematician.
For statistics or business calculations the 200LX is excellent. If you add the built-in Lotus 123 (and the fact that the calculator can be called from a Lotus cell and vice versa) it becomes even more powerful for statistics.

I found that the 320LX cant represent certain numbers. Positive or negative numbers between 33 and 64 which end in decimal one or six (.1 or .6) will be represented as that number with a one (1) in the 13th decimal place. This is true if the number comes from calculation or key entry. There is not much error in math, but you cant change the number of digits when copying to a report. You must carry all those decimal places into your document. You can hide them in the spread sheet but not the Word document.

I have a HP 320 LX. When I input "0.9" or some equation equal to exactly 0.9 in a cell in Excel CE, the number comes back as "0.9000000000xx" (can't remember exact digits), but definitely not 0.9. What gives?

It's probably a bug. Microsoft is famous for calculation errors. This one is probably due to the fact that 0.9 cannot be represented exactly as a binary number. The error does not show up in desktop excel, BTW. CE excel probably doesn't work in as high a precision as the desktop version.
I also tried it with Lotus 123 on my HP-200LX and I do not get this error.

See my message of Aug. 5th. The same is true for numbers ending in .6 or .1, but only between the whole numbers of 33 and 64 regardless of positive or negative. I had to send my unit back because you can't get rid of all those digits when you copy and paste to the Word application. These numbers will always have a "1" in the thirteeth decimal place. My calculations just happen to fall in this range all the time, so it was really a problem. I'm very glad I got rid of the 320LX. I wish the next release has these problems resolved. I would buy it again if they get the problems fixed.

Well Extentend Systems, INC said their JETEYE IR unit is incompatible for HP 320LX printing. Secondly, they would not offer a software patch to fix this incompatibility. Therefore the only solution to hook up any printer( not just HP IR printers) while on the road for hardcopy text is to get the IR attachment from HP. Shucks this reminds me of Sharp's Wizard/Zaurus approach: "Use only our equipment" or get screwed. I'll just have to use local fax machines with my PC Card modem until Win CE 2.0 fixes the print problems. Boy do I hate those thermal paper print outs!

You can export the 200LX data to ascii via GDBIO which is available in the PDA libraries. Then you can import the database into Schedule+ or Outlook.
Then synch with the 320 and it will be there.

I wanted to add a tip about using PC Anywhere to get your AOL e-mail.
It's true that you need 2 modems to actually connect to AOL. However, if you only have 1 modem, you can set your desktop PC to do flash sessions to get your AOL mail, then once the mail is downloaded and your desktop disconnects from AOL, you can dial into your desktop from your WIN CE palmtop and read/write your e-mail off-line. Then, the next time you've scheduled your flash session to run, the new mail you wrote will be sent from your desktop PC.

I have 320LX with a Motorola Montana 33.6 card modem. Everything works perfect (receiving e-mails via Inbox, surfing the web, etc) except sending e-mails. The same POP account on my desktop computer is working fine, but my HPC gets an error message, "Unexpected SMTP server error (Service error: 7)" whenever I try to send an e-mail. I tried various settings for the Inbox service option, but it didn't help. If I specify a return address (which is optional, as you know), the error message says, "There was an error specifying your return address to the server. Please check the return address specified in your service properties (Service error: 64)." I used to get very similar messages on my desktop computer for a while, and I could fix it by correcting the host and domain name of the DNS configuration in the Network control panel. So I went for the device name setting of my HPC, but it still didn't work. No mail server problem has been reported to my ISP, therefore the problem seems to lie in my HPC. Can anyone please help me?

What I don't understand is why the exact same settings specified in my desktop don't work on my HPC.
By the way, does anybody happen to know how INBOX inform its identity to a smtp server? I solved an almost identical problem on my desktop computer by observing the smtp command sequence between my desktop and the smtp server.
The problem was HELO, a smtp command which specifies the identity of my computer to the server. The command syntax of HELO is "HELO host.domain", and in my case it's "HELO tigre.hawaii.edu". I figured out e-mail programs such as INBOX get the host and domain name from the DNS configuration of the Network Control Panel and solved the problem by correcting the syntax.
Is getting information about the Pocket INBOX's smtp command sequence possible?

Just what is version 2.0 supposed to have that we would be willing to pay $129 for? If it had all of the following, I might consider paying for it:
1) The ability to print WYSIWYG via infrared
2) A global document search
3) The ability to choose the default display of files (icon, detail, etc.)
4) A spell checker
5) Handwriting recognition (really should be in ROM for speed)
6) A database function in Pocket Excel
7) More ROM
8) The ability to determine how much memory is available in the storage card
9) Lots more would be nice, but the first eight should have been in ver 1.0
Anyway, that's my small wish list. I would appreciate hearing as soon as someone knows what really is to be included in the upgrade. I have sucessufully "sync"ed my personal outlook folder (mail, calendar, contacts) with my HP320. Unfortunately my company uses a public "MS Exchange" based folder for contact, task and calendar databases. I have tried the Outlook favorites and internal sync functions (no problem sync-ing Outlook "Desktop" with "Laptop"), but I cannot find a way to change which Outlook folder HPC Explorer 1.1 "sysc"s my 320 to. Any ideas?
On a second note, I have not found a way to have more than one (calendar, contact, task) database on my HP320. Is it possible? Coming from the HP200 (which Puma will not support Outlook "sync"ing for)......well I find the inability to have more than one database annoying, and hope CE2 solves the problem. Thanks for the help!

I'm not sure about how to solve the synch problem. I do know that the 320 comes with some solutions for your concerns regarding the PIM. Pocket On Schedule provides multiple PIMS for Windows CE. Also, Allpens MobileForms provides a database for Windows CE. Both of these applications are available on the included CDRom. They need to be installed to the HPC to use them.

Allpen data base file is too large for the 4 megs of RAM in my 320LX. I have about 12000 records. I'm trying to install an ACE 20 meg PC card, and will transfer the data and to it when installed. According to the HPC explorer help screens, it is not possible to convert .2bp files from HPC to desktop. The advice is to insert into a pocket word document, and transfer to desktop !!
The files came when browsing the web, and I want to transfer to my desktop PC, but have not found a way to insert the *.2bp files into pocket word docs.
If the document already has an OLE, then no problem copying with CTRL C etc..., for example the letter template delivered with the machine.

If you get pocket paint from the Powertoys collection at microsoft.com, you can copy and paste into Pocket Word (something I find EXTREMELY convientient for things like mathmatical equations and diagrams)...also, when you transer a .bmp to your HPC, it is automatically converted to a .2bp by HPC explorer and vice versa....just like .doc files are converted to and from .pwd automatically.

I was finally able to load about 12000 records into Allpen. Had to pare down the # of fields but there is enough information for my purposes. I then loaded about 1400 files into Word. Each relates to a particular record in the database. Now all I need is a macro function to help open the Word file when I display a particular database field.
Are macros "in the works" for future release of WinCE? Or will there be a 3rd party vendor that might offer macros as an add-on?
Also, it would be quite handy if there were a database that could be loaded onto the flashcard in order to free up more of the precious 4 MB of RAM. Are any in development?

I just spoke to HP pre-sales and they said that the 300lx will not be able to take the upgrade because it lacks sufficient memory. I must say this seems a bit unfair considering they advertise a slot on the machine to accept the upgrade-suggesting that it will be possible. Perhaps they should offer free memory upgrades to 300lx customers. Voice your complaints.

My desktop and palmtop aren't on speaking terms. I've tried for the past two weeks to get them connected but with no luck. Here's what happens: I connect my HP 320LX to the docking cradle and then open HPC Explorer 1.1 Explorer starts communications and another window pops up, just like normal, informing me that it's initiating communications. The HPC's screen shows much the same thing, telling me that it's attempting to connect to the PC, but goes through 4 retries and then gives up. The HPC Explorer doesn't go any farther, it stops with that one window.
Any ideas?

There is no Windows CE 1.1. This fictional release was actually used by manufacturers that were providing HPC Explorer v1.1. As for the storage of the database on flash, this is not possible. The database uses ram access to speed up it's indexing and overall operation. It sounds like a Velo may have been a better choice since there are 8mb versions with internal ram expansion of another 16mb (total 24mb) all of which can be used by the database.

The Psion 5 does connect well with Windows 95 out of the box. CC:Mail is where you are going to have problems with any of the handheld units you've outlined. Windows CE will support it but you have to use a PC attached to your LAN with CC:Mail to dialup to. I do no know of a similar program for the Psion.

For CC:MAIL the venerable HP-200LX has it out of the box. It also supports FAX with addon software from our library, FULL Lotus 123, an excellent note taker, an adequate but minimal word processor (but you can install Word for DOS or Wordperfect for DOS on it if you need something better). And Thaddeus computing now offers an 8MB HP-200LX with a 16MHZ clock (twice as fast and twice as much memory as HP's version).
The recorder on the Velo is nice, but pocket voice recorders are plentiful and inexpensive; I'd use one of them (I do, actually) rather than use up memory in my PDA for recordings.

Trying to get appointments in Schedule+ from the desktop to the 300lx
The desktop and 300lx link and I get an okay message on the desktop. When I try to synchronize the 300lx with the desktop, transferring the desktop's appointments to the 300lx, it says "synchronizing" and up to 7 items (out of a few hundred) get transferred. It stalls there and I get a message that the 300lx hasn't responded in 30 seconds. I've tried everything in all the documentation to no avail. There is plenty of memory--this is a new machine--and there are no other programs running. Some items do get transferred. Is this a flaw in the software or a hardware defect? Help!

It sounds like a buffering problem. Are you using another cable besides the one HP provided? What type of system are you using for synchronization (cpu type/speed/ram)? What baud rate are you using for synchronization?

I, for one, could not stand Psion 5's nonstandard layout - I was typing gibberish because there was a strange character where I thought a comma or something should be. The HP and Velo are about equal because you trade off having a modem versus having a larger screen and larger keyboard. I chose the HP because of it's "oversize" features.

The way to enlarge fonts is to go to your fonts folder on your desktop and select the font names you want and it will give you a choice of which size fonts you want( I think the max is 24). You drag thoes fonts in your fonts folder (windows/fonts) onyour palmtop.

Hi,
Windows CE does not have a way to see how much of a PC Card is in use or free. This means that you can add data until you get an error saying that there is no more space left. There is no risk of losing existing data though.

I look forward to hearing from users on this forum about the hp360lx. I have owned a 200lx for over three years and elected not to upgrade to a 320lx primarily because of the differences in the pim's on the two units (the 200lx's is great) and(in my view) the high degree of reflectiveness of the 320lx's screen. Does anyone yet know whether the 360lx will improve over the 320lx in these two areas?
I should note that I am connected to aol and this forum via a Toshiba Libretto 50ct which i presently am testing. It is difficult to imagine that any of the hpc's will out perform this beauty except (1) size, but even there if it's not a palmpilot then a slightly larger shell probably only will mean taking up a bit more room in one's briefcase since even the hpc's aren't truly pocket size units, (2) instant on versus a lengthy win95 bootup, even in hibernation mode and (3) lack of pen input and a tricky pointing device on the Libretto.
This continues to be one of the most informative and well maintained forums on aol. Thanks again to the forum's staff.

I haven't seen a 360LX, and can't comment on the screen. On the PIMs, CE 2.0 does not offer much more than 1.0. Still no monthly view to match the HP200LX, although CE 2.0 does (finally) include a "Find" function and some other functions. The cosmetics are a bit improved, and you can select the font you want for Calendar.
My feeling is if you like the 200LX's PIMs, you'll still find CE 2.0's PIMs lacking in some areas. Those who liked 1.0's PIMs will be generally pleased with the improvements.

Apparently, HP has created their own monthly view--it is NOT present as a standard component of CE 2.0. My remarks were based on a 2.0 (beta) upgrade of NEC's.
From the screen shot at the HP Web page, it appears HP's exclusive monthly view on the 360 matches the monthly view of the 200LX. Good news for those who want to switch to CE... but HP still needs to port the 200LX's calculator, including HP Solver, before many of us consider the change.

Just thought that I would tell a tiny bit about the 360LX that I got my hands on this week. My Uncle works for a company called Connecting Point which provides technical support for all the computers at HP's Greeley, Colorado site. For some reason, they provided the managment with a 360LX and asked them to test it out. My Uncle really isn't into HPC's and all that, but knowing that I really am (being a HP LX user from 95LX-320LX) he "loaned" it to me for the week to check out. Please forgive any errors that I may make, for I have only had this test unit for 2 days and have had a limited amount of time to "play" with it!
In many ways, the 360LX is the same as the 320LX. Same form factor and nice screen. But the first thing that you might notice is that things are noticably faster. Maybe it is just me, but docs and spreadsheet load much faster than on my 320LX. Due to the new 66Mhz processor and 8MB RAM. Other than that, WCE 2.0 is nice, but I haven't really seen any HUGE difference. Except for the PowerPoint viewer which will more suited for the color models, but is a nice touch. So is the dedicated CompacFlash slot, though I did not have a card to use with it. I think though that I am going to wait for the soon to be released 6xxLX models with the color screens. But if you can't wait that long, you wouldn't be making a mistake by purchasing the 360LX. If you have any questions or comments, e-mail me at ActiveX64@aol.com. The current PC Week reviews betas of the 360, 620, and new MobilePro 700. They were not particularly kind to the HPs (although they did like the 620's screen), or even Windows CE. They liked the new NEC the best.
Hard day in the press on CE... Interactive Wall Street Journal also had a report on handhelds, and the story wasn't all that complimentary of MS's efforts. They (as the case with most of the press) seem to favor the PalmPilot.

Just received my new 360LX. I'm a Pilot fan, and the jury is out as to whether the 360LX (or any CE machine) is worth the switch. I'm disappointed with the weight and bulk. Speed is a pleasant surprise. I have not tried browsing or e-mail yet. That's what was most intriguing to me. When I travel, I don't always want to carry a laptop, but I do want to stay connected to the office via e-mail and/or PCAnywhere. We'll see.
My screen seems to be defective. When I move the hinge, I get black vertical lines and no other images appear until I move the screen to a certain spot. Seems like there's a bad connection. I'll probably swap it for a new one, assuming I decide to keep it at all.

You should be able to use both cradles at the same time if you have 2 free serial ports to plug them into. I would recommend that you use Outlook for synchronizing with the Pilot ant 360LX. You would have to synch 3 times to get the data on all platforms:
PC <--> Windows CE
PC <--> Pilot
PC <--> Windows CE
This way the CE device would have a copy of the data stored on the Pilot that was not already on the PC.

The A/b box is from a local hardware vendor and it is not manufactured by Jeteye. The jeteye is another serial device though that I use with it. Any serial switch should work.

I've set up Windows CE 2.0 Services and consulting the on line help there I discovered that there is supposedly a 'print' option on the 'File' menu.
I wanted to print a Pocket Word document to my HP Deskjet 1000C which is connected to the desktop computer.
I do not have a 'print' option in the Windows CE Services Mobile Devices folder.
Q1:How does one print a Pocket Word document??
Unfortunately the HP 1000C doesn't have an IR port on it.
Q2:Can one get an IR port that would connect to the printer? and could I still connect my desktop (a Pentium II) to it. Is there something like a "pass through" IR adapter/port allowing an IR receiver to receive IR from the 360 and also passing print jobs from the desktop directly to the printer?

I have a HP320LX and when first got it was excited about the capability to take notes with handwriting recognition software. To experiment with it I downloaded a shareware version of Calligraphy. After using this program for a couple weeks I have become very frustrated with it and have removed it. Here are some of the reasons: 1) This one in particular has nothing to do with the software and deals with all H/PC's, I have a hard time writing on the screen without touching the key pad, and what happens is a button will get pushed. Instead I will write from the side, but then it ends up being wrtten diaginally. This seems to complicate the text recognition part. 2) The software accepts pen input anywhere on the screen, so when I want to use the pen as a selection device it ends up being handwriting giberish. 3) The software just did not do a very good job at recognizing my handwriting. (which should not be hard since I print in caps most of the time).
My questions are: 1) What can be done to allow easier and more comfortable writing on the screen without being bothered by touching the keypad? And do I have to write in a straight line? 2) Is there a way to limit the area, or have a handwriting input window so that it is easier to use the stylus for other purposes at the same time? 3) Has anyone compared Calligraphy to another product and are they any better for recognition and learning my handwriting?

Hi,
To print from your H/PC you have to use a printer that has an IR port or a serial port. Only PCL printers are supported. If you are already connected to your desktop, transfer the file and print it via the PC. You can buy an IR print adapter from Extended Systems if you want but I would confirm that the printer is PCL and compatible.

Intellisync does support ECCO. I agree, I'd rather not have to spend the money for an add-on, but all my data is already in ECCO, and my office shares ECCO data (although that's not a dispositive factor for me). If the synch were as clean and easy as it is with the Pilot, I might be tempted to keep ECCO; otherwise, I'll switch to Outlook (since I own it anyway).

Anyone have a battery life estimate of their HP320LX with cheap NiCDs? I have noticed that when I use the Eveready NiCDs with my HP, the batter life is approx 2hours with minimal use of the backlight. These are batteries which have been charged internally - I am experimenting with NiCDs charged in a normal charger.

Try Radio Shack High Capacity NiCds, Bryan--they'll probably give you as long of life as you'll get short of switching to NiMHs. The high capacity versions (silver and blue) are rated at 850 mAH.

I would try the HiCap NiCds, but 850 mAH isn't a whole lot better than the 500 mAH these "normal" NiCds are rated at - I was really hoping for NiMH.
Radio Shack NiMH batteries are rated at 1200 mAH, but I read an article by the owner of Shier Sytems who said that HP did not reccomend them because the voltage falls off too fast for the backup circuit to do its job (which sounds a bit strange to me, since you can pull out the AAs with no warning and the backup circuit seems to handle that just fine). In any case, the Radio Shack salesman indicated the NiMH would work, they would just take longer to charge - would the HP recognize that they needed to be charged longer?

I would guess that the HP will not recognize that the batteries need longer to charge. The Charging circuit in my 200LX doesn't; I have to use 2 charging cycles for a full charge.

I know I can get WinCE2.0 for the 320LX. But, imagine my discouragement when I saw that HP has announced (released?) the 360LX with a faster processor and a better screen...
Will HP be offering an upgrade to the 320 for screen and processor improvements? I doubt it, since they were lousy at updating the 100/200 line. I should have learned and waited a while for the market to shape up on these devices.

Forgive my indignant nature, but I am constantly amazed at the attitudes that people display towards computer manufacturers.
Your attitude about HP not supporting "upgrades" in the 100/200, and your expectation that they would/should provide upgrades to make the 320LX into a 360 is, from my perspective, quite unreasonable.
You need to consider the nature of manufacturing. Do you expect Ford to release an "upgrade" to make your 96 Mustang into a 97, Frigidaire to offer year by year upgrades to their refrigerators? If not, then consider why not.
HP, as with all manufacturers, has limited production capacity. How much of their production capacity would you expect them to divert to "upgrade kits" for the 320's rather than production of the new 360's. How many of the "upgrade kits" do you think would sell considering the fact that the "upgraded" 320 would still have the same slower processor and lower RAM capacity.
The "systems" in a computer (ie. video/storage/processor/ram/I-O....) are quite interconnected and interdependant. I have to imagine that in order -NOT- to compromize on any of the new capabilities of MICROSOFT's efforts in WinCE2 and HITACHI's efforts on the processor, HP had to make a decision not to keep the hardware subsystems in the new 360's and 6xx's backward compatible with the 320's.
You must note that small systems such as PDA's, and in most respects even full size notebook computers, ARE NOT, and at the <$1000 price CAN NOT be made modular in the same way that desktop computers can.
Oh well, at least I feel better now.

I have monitored this board and several others on the handhelds for the past few months. I decided to wait until the 360's came out, rather than purchase a 320 or wait longer for the 600's. I got my unit about 10 days ago and so far am quite pleased. I use MS Outlook at work and it syncs easily and nicely. I also sync with my laptop at home and all is working well. I do have a communications problem sometimes with either PC recognizing the handheld connection. Not sure what causes this, but have been able to re-boot and it works. Overall, I am glad I waited. The 360LX does everything I need so far. I am now going to see how the e-mail interface works and will report back.

Hi,
I've seen similar communications problems and have figured out what is causing them. If you are running a connection to the internet before connecting to your H/PC you may experience problems. This is due to a limitation in Windows 95 that you can only have one PPP connection at a time and the route information is not aged out (takes about 10 minutes). The solution is to install the 1.2 dialup software that Microsoft provides on the CD.
Then you will be able to dialup and synch as well.

At first glance, the Mobilon seems better (12meg, modem), but the HP also has its pluses (white backlight, monthview, etc.). When it comes down to real life use, which is the winner (for you)?

The thing to keep in mind is what you are going to use it for. The HP allows you to use Compacf Flash and a PC Card modem if you need to but the Sharp only has the PC Card slot. I would consider this and also consider the accessories that are included.

I can give you one good reason why they should be offering upgrades: they want to keep their customers. Not doing so would be suicide in this market - believe it or not, not everyone has the resources to buy a $700 palmtop, find it obselete, and then go ahead and spend another $700 for a new one. It's much more economical to buy the upgrade, and HP also gets double benefits - they do probably make some money on this, while at the same time keeping their customers happy and keeping open the possibility that they'd buy another one someday.

HP IS offering current customers an upgrade to Windows CE 2.0. The units were designed to allow upgrading the system.
"Upgrading" the screen and processor are entirely different issues. The screen is the single most expensive component of all PDAs. While customers can pop in the upgrade card to convert to CE 2.0, replacing the screen and processor would require a trip back to HP service. Between the cost of parts and labor, there is no way HP or any other OEM could do this at even a break-even price that most consumers would be willing to pay.
And why should they do this at only break-even? They are entitled to a fair profit--without it, they won't be around to make more great products. As Larry pointed out, if your HP wasn't "obsolete" when you bought it, the presence of a newer model doesn't diminish any of the utility of your current unit. For those who have had their HPs for many months, the HPC has provided value in managing contact information, scheduling, etc. If the 320 didn't provide that value, the 360 isn't enough of an improvement to change that fact. The 360 is a nicer unit, but it still performs the same basic functions.
I realize others probably share your view, and it's a common one with many PDAs. But PDAs are not high margin devices that make it practical for manufacturers to essentially swap new for old units. Also, with very few exceptions, most PDAs have a relatively short life as far as being the latest and greatest--newer versions seem to come out every 9-12 months. That leaves us all with a universal "upgrade" option--sell the old for the best price you can get and apply the proceeds to a new unit IF you feel the new one offers enough advantages to justify the cost. If not, try to be happy about how much your current model does for you, and wait another year for the NextNewOne. ;)

There's always a certain amount of settling for thing. For example, there was no spell checker in pocket word, but you managed to get along without it. You couldn't freeze panes in Excel, but you dealt with the inconvenience. You wanted color (well, I still don't but...) or more grays, but you were able to live with a 4-level gray display since that was the best that was out their and you felt that you NEEDED the PDA, even if their were rough edges.
Now one sees that many of these things have been "fixed" and can have a more enjoyable PDA experience (and become green with envy watching others). There are still somethings that may never be "fixed." You still can't just copy Quake on to your Velo 500 or 620LX and blast away.....but again more "settling."
That's my best explanation of the trap many fall into.

The other possibility is that he purchased the device for one specific feature and found the rest lacking. For example, many people purchased an H/PC simply for the ability to browse the web on a $500-$700 device, not possible on other PDAs in this price range except recently (Psion, for example), and found the other apps to be a bit on the lean side. However, I do think HP is doing everything it can to provide an upgrade path to older users. Remember that each upgrade is 8Mbytes of ROM, which without royalties to Microsoft is still worth some money.

I am all for settling...until they make a unit that is as small as the current HPCs and as fully functional as a laptop, with the 20+ hours of battery life I don't want to get too much more advanced. I have a laptop, its hard to lug everywhere. My HPC goes everywhere with me, in a coat pocket, in my wife's purse...the thing is, I have something with me at all times in case I need to access work info, etc. If color screens and faster processors cut down on the battery life and add weight or size to the unit, it's no good for what a HPC is supposed to be, a convenient easy to lug around extension of our computers. If you want at true computer experience get a laptop and deal with it's problems, if you want a HPC, do some research, pick one that meets your needs and realize that in 6 months it will be outdone by a new unit.....just like computers.
The computer or HPC is alot like cars when you look at replacing them. There's always a new model around the corner. You don't expect the car dealer to let you upgrade for free when that new truck comes out, you shouldn't expect HPC manufacturers to either.

The 320's ram is not upgradeable. You can use the flash to offload data to the PC Card and then increase the ram by moving the slider though.

My, what I started.....
First, when the CE2.0 upgrade was announced, and the price of the 320LX reduced from $699 to $599, the 360LX was NOT announced. The 360 was only announced when the price reduction to $499 took place, which happened to be 35 days after my purchase of the 320, from a vendor that offered a *30* day return policy. HP KNEW the 360 was around the corner, and I for one feel suckered by them for withholding this information. Didn't they think that any new buyer would be interested in a faster processor and better graphics?
To answer a prior commentor to my original post: No, I don't expect Ford to upgrade my Mustang from a '96 to a '97 model. However, when I make the decision to buy a 1996 car at the end of the model year, at the commensurate discount levels, it is almost ALWAYS after knowing what the new model was going to offer and deciding that the extra features were not worth the price difference. My complaint is in HP not offering their customers and prospective customers the most accurate and up-to-date information as to the state of the technology being currently offered, or soon to be offered in the marketplace. This is not a good way to build customer loyalty. Maybe that is the reason why I decided to make my next computer purchase a Compaq 300Mhz instead of an HP. My last desktop was an HP, and a good one. But their attitude ticks me off.
Second, I find it hard to believe that these units could not be engineered with CPU upgrade in mind. That may be naive on my part, and I am sure that there are "indignant" ones on this board who will point that out to me. But, again, I have to think that it is possible to provide this capability given the sophistication of today's technology. Same with the screens. Again, there has to be a way to do this.
I am not asking HP to provide us with low-cost or zero cost upgrades for these units. I am simply asking for the opportunity to have the choice as to whether I would like to spend some money to enhance the capabilities of the unit, rather than having to throw it away and buy a whole new unit to be able to get the advantage of the new features. I don't think this desire is at all unreasonable, especially given the fact that these units represent a significant initial cost.
Well, now MY rant is over. Thanks for the opportunity. Can't wait to see the replies stating what a jerk I am for wanting to be treated with some respect by the company with whom I do business.

I wouldn't say you are a jerk or anything...however, the 360 was announced some time ago and it is naive to think that a bigger better unit is not always around the corner (that's always the case in the computer world). You bit and got a 320LX (great choice!) it's one of the best, I had a 100LX for about 4 years...I just couldn't affort to move to the 320 and went with NEC (only due to price). I will say you are totally wrong about HP, they have always been up front and dealt in the most reputable way. I've done business with them for clinical analyzers, paltops, desktops and never had an issue. The service is always superb. If you really want the 360, sell your 320 and get one (HP always does well at holding it's value on the market). Stop complaining and realize that the HPC market is just like the computer market, your unit is old before you get the wrapper off.

No one thinks you're a "jerk"--and given the timing of your 320 purchase, I fully understand how you feel. Those of you who get caught just beyond a 30 day return period are between a rock and a hard place--haven't had your "old" unit long enough for it to have paid off, but can't return it. Suggestion...
Call HP customer relations, ask for a supervisor, and calmly and succinctly explain your plight--make a list of points to cover with them. Try to keep it "calmly assertive"--venting or emotionalism will most likely work against you. Be sure to offer to fax them proof of purchase to verify the timing in your case. I've had some experience with this approach HP where they DID go above and beyond their standard policy and warranty to correct my problem (nothing to do with PDAs).
See if they will make any accommodation. If that goes no where, try the dealer as well. While you may not be able to get a "swap" or upgrade, perhaps one of the parties would offer to sell you the new unit at dealer cost (I don't know what that is, or if it would satisfy you--but this is the best approach I can think of). Then you could sell the old unit, and hopefully be out of pocket for about the same amount as if you had bought the 360 initially.
Now, on to other things... sure, PDAs could be made with plug in components to allow for more upgrading. But the manufacturing cost increases considerably (sockets are expensive, take up more room, cases have to be made differently, etc.), and the resulting price may not prove competitive. Also, faster processors may need different power regulation, resistance, capacitance, etc., so it's not always a case of "just plug in the newer chip." So yes, it *could* be done, but engineering and manufacturing cost increases would likely inflate the consumer price unattractively.
As far as HP giving you notice of the 360 coming, that's always a sticky issue. Manufacturers are sometimes reluctant to pre-announce products... concerns include competitive issues, being able to make ship dates, and you absolutely kill the sales of all units in sales channels. It's likely the 360 was in an early engineering model form when the 320 was first released. So how soon should HP preannounce?
Unfortunately, unless companies announced many months in advance (thus tipping off the competition), customers in your situation--buying a few days before the NextNewOne is announced, will always be in a Catch 22 situation.

I can think of several PDAs I was told (under NDA) were coming that never saw the light of day. In several cases, "coming" was only three months from when I was told. So early announcements aren't always as easy as they may seem.

Hi,
Pocket On Schedule uses the internal database of Windows CE which must reside in the internal ram of the system. There is no utility to copy that database and put it on a PC Card or Compact Flash card and put it on another unit.
In Windows CE 2.0, you can synchronize with 2 systems. I recommend that you get the 2.0 upgrade for the 320 when it comes out.

It's not necessarily the newer model that meets the needs, it's the new OS - I was dismayed to find that Pocket Word didn't have a spell check, for example. But I was still thrilled overall, and I'm just happy that a new version with some better versions of the software is coming out.

Sorry to have opened such a can of worms - I just felt that HP had almost a duty to release an upgrade to CE 2, without really thinking it through as to why. I guess I'm of an opinion that the companies have a responsibility to their customers, whether it yields them profit or not . . . that may seem narrow, but it just seems like it would be nice to have an exception to the rule nowadays.
On to a different topic - I'm looking to get a PCMIA modem for my 320LX for Christmas, and I'm wondering where I can find a list of approved modems for the device (I remember reading that only certain ones meet the power specifications or something?). Also, if anyone has a particularly great modem they'd like to recommend, I'm open to suggestions.

Actually, that is not that far off! At Comdex, Microsoft, HP and Hitachi announced support for Clik! It is not scheduled to ship until 2nd Quarter 98 at the earliest. Also, the unit has a serial port and a proprietary connector to hook up to other systems. The other thing to be aware of is that it may come as an internal drive for some Windows CE devices in the future.

I just went to the HP Handhelds Web site where the two press releases are still posted. The price reduction on the 320LX and the WinCE2.0 upgrade was announced on September 2, 1997. The 360 LX was announced on October 13, 1997. I bought my "old one" in September.
Sorry, this just smacks of wanting to clean out old inventory before the announcement of the "new one" made the 320LX less sellable.

Hewlett- Packard maintains their own model compatibility list, which can be found on their web site of you go to the Palmtops section. The list is fairly short and the two they reccomend are the Motorola Montana and the US Robotics Sportster. I can tell you that most modems will work, and that WindowsCE does a great job at recognizing them. For example, even my 14.4 AT&T Keep-in-Touch worked well, and if Microsoft added a driver for that, they probably have one for anything!

Could someone please explain what the "click" drive is and give its specs. I thought that a compact flash card (hp unit) would be the best that I could do for storage with a pcmcia modem. Will this Iomega device be a better alternative? In excess of 20 megs would seem like an almost inexhaustable amount of storage on a pda, but I remember when a 40 meg hard drive on my 8086 was "more than I would ever use." Finally, can the pda's speed be increased by jiggering certain settings that allocate its internal memory between storage and ram if one were to use a separate storage media? Thanks.

Hi,
The Clik! drive is a 40mb floppy disk the size of a quarter. It will not be available for about 6 months. Hitachi, HP and Microsoft are committed to providing support for it. The downside to this device will be file i/o speed - it is limited to 115.2k since it will hook up via the serial port. Future CE devices may have this installed internally.
The PDA's speed is not really relative to the amount of ram allocated to applications. The speed is relative to the CPU type and the speed of the CPU.

I have tried Rayovac renewable (rechargeable) alkalines and they work great. They last about as long as regular alkalines and do not have the sudden drop off that NiCDs do.

Yes as always moving media is much slower than flash. Also, it will require more power. The advantage is that the cost is much lower - $10.00 for 40mb.

I think you will find that the renewals last longer for the first few charges and then drop fairly fast after that - It may be more cost effective to use the NiCDs and live with the shorter life. Besides, your HP can charge NiCDs when it is plugged in, and will do so in about an hour.

I've learned a tremendous am't by reading these discussions--now I'm eager to buy HPC! However, I appreciate your feedback since I'm on the fence about "jumping in" with such a lightning fast technology! (Part of me wants to just run out and get the PalmPilot for a year 'til the ground settles out a little!)
Here are my primary questions: 1) What will color availability do to the monochrome market--how cheaply do you think I could pick up a 360 lx, or other highend mono, after the colors saturate the market? 2) What's the quality of the 1st generation color screens? 3) Re the HP line, does the extra drain of a color screen suck up any quickness of the 620 lx's 75mhz over the 360 lx's 60mhz--that is, if I don't need color, do I do just as well to get the 360 lx? 4) If a message recorder is critical (I live in LA and am behind the wheel a LOT), which machine (color or mono) should I consider that's muscled enuf to handle CE 2.0 and that is a quality machine? 5) Where can I get the best price on that machine?

You might have to wait a few days for some informed answers to many of your questions--not many have a 620LX yet. I haven't seen the screen, so can't comment on the quality.
I do not expect the price of the 360 to drop significantly in the near future--it's a new unit with 2.0, and already priced below the 620. Better battery life on the gray scale units may keep their demand up some... I don't see the 360 dropping until something newer gets a few months away. Unless you want to buy one second hand, you're not likely to see a big drop in price soon.
Of course, my crystal ball is cracked and clouded, so the above is little more than a guess. ;)

I have heard in general that the color screens decrease the battery life by a great amount, mostly due to the need for contstant backlighting. I think you will see a situation similar to the notebook market six or seven years ago - most laptops had greyscale screens and the color panels were high end oddities which only the wealthy could afford. As the technology progressed, the color filtered down to the value priced devices. I'm sure in a few years, you will see color screens proliferate, but I don't think that mono will ever dissapear completely (as it seems to have on laptops) since people will always want a device which can run for long periods with little power.
As far as the 620LX, I have seen some preliminary speed tests with a pre-beta unit (now that should be authentic) which placed it ahead of the monochrome 360LX on most tests - the others could be do to the higher pixel depth (i.e. color) on the 620LX or some other quirk of the hardware they were working out.

I've seen *pictures* of it from objective sources. It is similar in quality to that of a dual-scan laptop. You can certainly tell that it is a color screen, but the colors appear somewhat washed-out.

Also, just the fact that there is the need for 3 colors per cell. I use the backlight on my Velo almost contantly and get a solid 8 hours. The color devices are *rated* for 5 hours.

I disagree with the comment that the 620's screen appears washed out. I've got a 620, arrived Thursday from J&R Music World, and the screen is BEAUTIFUL. Looks like an active-matrix screen - bright colors, bright display, just great. Speed is fine - faster than the 360LX, feels faster than, say, the Velo. Incredibly well-built. Everything about it reeks quality. I love it so far. Can't comment on batterylife yet, but the way I work, shouldn't be a problem (i.e., recharge every day or two). Love it...

I'm surprised Philips won't service the unit at all...while most warranties specifically do NOT cover damage due to abuse (i.e. dropping, slamming in door, etc.) the companies will usually repair the device for a fee.
As far as HP is concerned, their support is top-notch, and while they might charge for repair, I can't imagine that they wouldn't do whatever it takes to make it work again. When I had trouble with my 320LX, they sent a FedEX person to my house to pick it up, and then FedEXd it back again three days later when the unit was repaired.

Actually I realized after reading the forum that some had problems with the finish flaking off and they seemed to have gotten an new one. I have had the same problem and was actually thinking of contacting them on it when I dropped it. I put it into my pocket maybe 20 times and the finish started wearing right off so I stopped. It's my understanding that the new HPs still don't offer more than the standard calculator that's part of Windows CE. So no RPN or HP Solver.
The 360LX does offer free financial calculation software (I'm assuming Landware's--you can get info on that from their web site--it's listed in our Windows CE sites collection). Landware's done other HP calculator emulations, so it should be adequate for financial calc's.

It is part number MP940239, and you can order it by calling Mobile Planet at 800-675-2638. I called to order mine on Friday, but unfortunately it is backordered until January 15. But, Mobile Planet is the first place were I have found the upgrade at all. If you call HP directly they will tell you that it will be available via their resellers, and don't tell you much else. Those who were eligible for the free upgrade have been reporting receiving their upgrades, and it sounds like those people are getting top priority.

Pocket on schedule has a weird problem as well. When the beta shipped for version 2, I called and let them know that the POS calendar was reading the appointments just fine but the embedded calendar for WINCE was about 8 hours off. They said it was fixed but it isn't.

The financial software offered without charge to 360LX owners when they register the product is Landware's Fiscal Pro, which emulates certain of the applications which are part of the 200LX calculator. However, it does not use RPN logic. For that, I bought Pocket BizCalc ($39.95 from www.mobilsoft.com). The combination of Pocket BizCalc and Fiscal Pro provides all of the functionality of the HP200LX calculator except for the Solver. I have not found any Windows CE program that can fully duplicate the Solver function although there is a program called Pocket Solver that can duplicate some but not all of the Solver funcionality.

I use a Simple Technology 33.6. (from Mobile Planet) It works fine. Unfortunately it is a 5 volt card and 10 - 12 minutes is the max use on batteries only. But most of the time the phone jack is near an AC outlet so I use the adapter as my primary power. I do look forward to the day of wireless modems. I experienced some wireless connectivity while researching with the Ricochet wireless network in Silicon valley. Great potential ! Speed was 38,400 bps. I do believe whoever cracks this wireless world is going to get a nice pot of change from the WIN CE users.

I'm contemplating buying the 620LX and would appreciate any comments on its strengths and weaknesses.
There are two core criticisms of which I'm aware - short battery life and no built-in modem. I understand the reasons and they're not problems to me. However, I have some questions:
1. Is the screen legible?
2. Are the PIMs good or will I have to buy third party software (eg Pocket On Schedule) to supplement?
3. Does it come with Pocket Quicken?
4. Can I customize the expense software that comes with the 620LX?
5. Is there a size limit on the Word files for viewing and/or editing?
6. Must Word files be converted first via special software before viewing or editing them in Pocket Word?
7. WCE 1.0 was awkward in how files were deleted (especially database files) or even copied to the PCMCIA card. Does WCE 2.0 operate more like Windows 95?
Any observations on speed, quality, connectivity, etc would be greatly appreciated.
I use the Libretto 50CT and like it a lot. Its biggest shortfall is lack of instant on and the ability to quickly retrieve or input a phone number, address, or schedule opening. Seems like the ideal palmtop is still on the drawing boards.

Thanks to Craig and John for their response on my earlier question. Landware tells me that they expect to have RPN in their fiscal pro calculator in 1Q98. The fiscal pro software includes TVM and conversions similar to what the calculator on the 200lx had. One new question. I am looking for a way to organize my address book by projects. On my 200lx, I just kept a separate file for each project. Right now I have created catagories for each project on the 360lx. Is there a better way? I am looking for something that will sync with Outlook if possible. Thanks

I can't answer all your questions since I don't have a 620LX, but here goes on those I can take a stab at:
1. Those who have used or seen the 620LX seem satisfied with the screen.
2. How "good" the PIMs are depend on your preferences... they are not substantially different than CE 1.0. However, the appointment calendar now has a search feature, and HP has a monthly view (exclusive feature not found on other CE devices). You certainly can stay organized with the stock PIMs--whether or not you opt for a third party product is a matter of personal preference.
3. No Pocket Quicken.
4. Don't know.
5. Pocket Word seems unable to scroll to the bottom of files larger than 660K--this was a "feature?" in 1.0, and based on my experience with a beta upgrade card for NEC, has not been corrected. Plain text files of virtually any size can be opened with PIE.
6. Yes, Word files undergo some translation (automatically) when moved from the desktop to HPC. The Desktop Explorer handles the translation without any special effort on your part. If you don't want translation, try Rich Text Forma--CE 2.0 now supports RTF files directly.
7. CE 2.0 still handles pretty much like 1.0.

With the introduction of the 620lx I may finally move from the 200lx. I do have a few questions however.

As a side note I agreewith a prior post that the Libretto is a great unit and compares favorably in many ways to the hpc's since it is a "real" computer (in fact i'm using it now) but no instant on is a killer and makes the Libretto impractical as a pda and its small size makes it less than a laptop. This probably is the reason that the Libretto now sells for about $1200.

The Casio QV 700 camera uses Compact Flash. The Compact Flash is in standard FAT format and it can be used in any of the H/PCs to transfer pictures. You can not use them directly though since they are not in native JPG format. They have a 5k header that is a thumbnail of the picture.

1. HP claims that the extended battery provides approximately 15 hours of useage.
2. The extended battery pack does increase the size of the unit but I do not know how much. I have not seen one yet.
3. I do not see an option to insert footnotes into Pocket Word.
4. There is an option to import and export Word Perfect 5.x files via ActiveSync.
5. I have not worked with Sprynet. I do know that they have a special application for Windows CE since their e-mail system has multiple e-mail hosts.

Actually, there is SpryNet for Windows CE. There is a review for it on page 49 of the December issue of Mobile Computing and Communications. It's main advantages are "Wide Assortment of POPs" and "Reliable Connections." However, the disadvantages were "May Need To Reinstall ISP Software" and "Doesn't Support Compuserve."
I assume this version of SpryNet for Windows CE looks and functions similarly to SpryNet for Windows 3.1x/95. In the review, there was no screenshot. From what I've read, however, it seems promising. Maybe AOL should finally realize that they need to develop their own version for Windows CE. :-)
Also, according to the article, the program may be downloaded from SpryNet's web site (www.sprynet.com) The file size is 2.5MB. It's compatible with Windows CE 1.x, and 2.0.

I saw the 620 at Compusa and have the following comments:
1. Big and heavy but still fits in coat pocket
2. Screen is very nice, looks almost like a tft screen (you can se it at many angles).
3. Performance was quite good, better than the 320
4. Keyboard is soft touch, and not like the 320 at all. I typed fine with few mistakes but the key click sound didn't sound off on each press even though the screen recorded the key stroke
5. Audio recording quality was poor but wav files sound good and can be playd very loud.
6. Unit has 16 megs of ram and seems well built
7. Pen is spring stored so you can shoot it at people.

Smaller screens are better suited for passive matrix, because, all other things being eqauls, the response rate and saturation is directly proportional to the number pixels on screen (in which fewer pixels implies increased brightness and responsiveness).

I am trying to connect my 360LX to the Internet using IBM.net. Has anyone done this successfully? Any tricks or helpful hints? My modem works for faxing, so I assume that is o.k.

I have found the 620LX battery life to be adequate for a day's work as long as I recharge it every night. I extimate that I use it about two hours per day but it is hard to keep track of this properly. Do you know of any software that tracks actual hours of use? Too bad that CE devices do not track all the battery usage statistics that are available in the Psion series 5!

The 620 uses an SH3 while the MobilePro 450 uses a Mips. The are not compatible. Most vendors sell both types of programs with their software.

Can anyone assist me with LX 320 vs 360. I plan on using it heavily with ACT 3.0 and my contacts and daily/weekly/monthly schedule...some word processing and math calculations, 'To Do's etc., but primarily for having my PC in sinc with my H/pc for scheduling and contacts. It's my understanding that Act for WinCE won't run on a 2.0 machine. Since I don't use ACT (Symantec products are banned from my HDD since Norton Utilities crashed it), I might not have the latest info.
However, I do have a 620 and must report that the screen is incredible. I upgraded from a 320 and I wouldn't go back. The machine is zippier, the screen responds much better to my stylus touches, and so far the battery life seems adequate. I do believe the color screen makes it easier to read. So, if you can afford the extra, I'd go with the 620.

There are no memory effects for lithium. You can recharge it mid cycle without a problem. Periodic full cycling will still be useful - the battery life will diminish over time on all batteries.

I'm talking about 3rd party applications. I'm rapidly running out of system RAM after only loading 3 or 4 apps. Is there any way, I can copy these to my RAM card and modify the registry to recognize their new locations and run them from the card?

The answer to the original question is YES. I have down this with pcAnywhere. I copied it to my compact flash card, and it runs just fine. BUT, even though I moved the connection files that I made to the directory it was in, it did not find them. I used a registery editor called RegEditCE and found the key for pcAnywhere and changed the install directory to the directory on the compact flash card, after that it found the connection files and everything worked just fine.
What I find most annoying about WinCE software is that most install programs for them do not allow the user to designated the directory in which they want the program installed to. I understand this was because of guidelines provided by Microsoft. I am also told that with 2.0 of WinCE Microsoft has changed this position, and hopefully all software vendors will allow us to install our software where we want it to be installed! Good luck.

Hi,
Yes to both. PC Cards use power when they are in the slot. The difference is how much power - the flash cards use about 1-3 milliamperes while idle, while the modems use from 5 to 100's while idle depending on the manufacturer and the design.
I recommend removing the modem from your system if you are not using it.

In 2.0 there is no documentation about what occurs if you turn off the card with the software. I suspect that it will not power the card but I do not know for sure. Also, not all slots have this feature. The compact flash slot does not from what I've seen.

Hi,
I recommend buying a new HP Laser Printer. They have IRDA on the front and are supported right out of the box with CE.
Anyone walking up to it can print.
For Sync I would use a Jeteye PC adapter to do that. It would be attached to a PC and the user would walk up to it and then request ActiveSync via IR and it would work - no need for the keyboard or screen even.

The 620 uses a different processor - the SH3. It is generally slower for accessing ram than the Mips due to it's design.
I think that is what you are seeing and there is no "fix" for it. If you want the fastest speed, check out the Mobilon 4500 which is now in stores.

I don't see any pcmcia card icon displayed when the card is inserted. I am assuming that it would be pictured in the box on the lower right corner of the scree along with the clock, bfind icon, month-at-a-glance icon and ac plug icon. Am I missing something? I am considering purchasing the 620 and have numerous Database files that I use on my 200LX. I didn't see a database manager listed as one of the applications included with the CE units. Does it include a database manager or will I need to purchase third party software.

HP's web site doesn't list any provided database application for the HP620LX... I wouldn't be surprised if there's at least a demo version of AllPen on the CD. I don't have a 620, so can't be sure--hopefully, one of our members will chime in.
Short of installing SoftWindows95, there is no way to translate your phone and appointment files on a Mac. The provided translation tool, which works quite well, presumes you have a Win95 box.

I just upgraded my 320 and, although it doesn't run as fast as my 360, the upgrade is a definite improvement. I am having a significant problem, however, using the HP month-at-a-glance program which is acting very flaky on the 320. Has anyone else had this problem or know what is happening?

With respect to recognizing compact flash and modem cards, I can see and use each when inserted, but I though that a prior post had mentioned an icon that I don't have when my flash card is in or when my modem is inserted. Also, I can't figure out how to determine how much room is left on my compact flash card. Is there a way to shut down the modem when inserted and not in use to cut battery drain. It simply is easier for purposes of storage to leave it inserted.

If anyone is trying to configure their hp for LAN connnection, the instructions that Chris has posted on his web site are invaluable. No support personel at HP could help me connect to my corporate lan. Without those pages I would have been lost. That being said, now that I have connected to my lan is it at all an advantage over connecting serially. Prior to settting the hp up on the lan, I did not understand its limited funtionality over the lan (no client) therefore all I can do is connect to the internet and synch my machine. Finally, if anyone uses a utility called Iware to assign lan IP addresses I don't think that it will be possible for you to activesynch your hp on the lan as a result of conflicts between virtual winsocks. You must get a static IP address from your system administrator to have a prayer of using the hp, I learned this the hard way.

Having used an hp200lx for several years and now switching to a 620lx the main drawback to me is battery life. I had inquired previously about the possibility of zinc air batteries and have read, as PDCLarry confirmed, that one company is designing them in a AA form factor for handheld devices. Any update on this issue because 20+ hours of battery life would make a vast difference. The 3 or so hrs that I get now is a bit frustrating.

After being unable to fax a fully formatted pocket word document directly from pocket word, I checked Bsquare's web site and noticed that they have had available since June 20, 1997 an upgraded version 3.1 of their software which purports to send fully formatted faxes directly from pocket word. To my surprise and dismay, however, the version of bfax pro on my hp620lx that I purchased 5 days ago is version 3.01.7037HP. Is it possible that my brand new hp (and presumably everyone else's too) doesn't have the latest software (from June 20, 1997) in its rom? What is worse is that a ce2.0 upgrade is not yet available from bsquare, and I don't know how I will be able to upgrade the version of bfax on the hp since it is in rom and, to my knowledge, can't be altered or removed. Anyone have any insights? I hope that I am just missing something simple here.

If you are using it with WinCE, the Motorola Montana has been a good performer, relatively modest power requirements (for a 33.6) and is on everyones compatibility list, which means it is guaranteed to work and you have a better chance of obtaining support if it doesn't perform as you expected. Many ISPs have similar pricing, your answer depends on if you want a local or national ISP. Sprynet has committed to WinCE, offering a control panel which integrates all the options for connecting to that service.

CDW has the 620LX for $825, but it wasn't in stock when I checked a few days ago. Next cheapest I found was Pangea Direct, at $849, new unit arrived today, going to go try it out!

Chris, your characterization of how ethernet is documented is exaclty correct. Even hp's tech support, which is generally good, could only tell me to put in the card then recited a few keystrokes.
